Twilight photos in LA: when they're worth it, and how to time them this fall

A twilight photo is the one frame that makes a buyer stop scrolling. It's worth it when the home has something the dark brings out: a pool, a view, glass, landscape lighting, or a facade with real character. This fall the window moves fast. LA sunsets slide from about 6:35 pm in early October to about 5:00 pm once clocks fall back on November 1. Book the twilight first, then build the rest of the shoot around it.

What a twilight photo actually does

Most listings lead with a midday front exterior. It's accurate, and it looks like every other card in the search results. A twilight frame flips the contrast: a deep blue or pink sky, every window glowing, the pool lit. The home reads as warm and lived in, and it stands out in a grid of daytime shots.

That matters most in the first few days on market, when the hero image is doing nearly all the work. On Zillow, Redfin and Instagram, the first photo decides whether anyone taps. Twilight gives you a first photo nobody else on the street has.

When twilight is worth it

  • The home has a pool or outdoor living. Lit water, string lights and a fire feature photograph far better at dusk than at noon.
  • There's a view. City lights from the hills, or the last color over the ocean, only exist for a few minutes a day.
  • The architecture is the selling point. Glass walls, clerestories, Spanish arches, a lit entry. Twilight turns the facade into the story.
  • The listing is priced to compete on image. At the upper end, buyers expect a hero frame that looks like a magazine cover. Our $1M vs. $5M guide breaks down where that line usually falls.
  • The daytime front is ordinary. A plain stucco facade at noon can look inviting at dusk with the lights on and the landscape lit.

When to skip it

Twilight won't rescue every listing. If the home has no exterior lighting, faces a busy street, or the selling point is the interior layout, your money goes further on stronger interiors, a floor plan or a 3D tour. A condo with no private outdoor space usually doesn't need it either, unless the unit has a view worth showing after dark.

Timing twilight in LA this fall

The best light lasts about 20 minutes, starting right around sunset. That's when the sky still holds color and the interior lights balance with it. Here's roughly when that window opens in Los Angeles over the next few months:

  • Early October: sunset around 6:35 pm.
  • Late October: around 6:00 pm.
  • After clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1: around 5:00 pm, overnight.
  • December: the earliest of the year, around 4:45 pm.

Two things follow from that. First, once November hits, a twilight shoot can wrap before most people leave work, so a weekday evening is easy to schedule with sellers. Second, the day half of the shoot gets shorter. We usually start the interiors in the early afternoon, move outside as the light drops, and finish on the twilight frame. One visit, one appointment for the seller.

Weather counts too. A clear sky after a storm gives the deepest blues, and a few high clouds can catch pink. Thick marine layer near the coast can flatten it, so we keep an eye on the forecast the day before.

Real twilight vs. virtual twilight

A real twilight shoot means we're on site at dusk with every light on. Virtual twilight starts from a daytime photo, and the sky and window glow are added in the edit. Both have a place.

  • Real twilight is the strongest version. The light on the landscape, the reflections in the pool and the glow through the glass are all real. It's included in our Signature package, along with day-to-night video.
  • Virtual twilight costs less and needs no extra trip. Our Debut package includes 2 virtual twilight images and Premiere includes 4. It works best on simple, front-facing exteriors.

Either way, we label edited skies as digitally enhanced. The photos on this page are from a real twilight shoot in the Hollywood Hills with the skies replaced in the edit, and they carry that label. Buyers should never feel surprised when they pull up to the house.

How to prep the home for a twilight shoot

  • Every light on, every bulb working. Swap dead bulbs a day ahead, and match warm color temperatures where you can.
  • Pool and spa lights on, water clean, covers off, and the fire feature ready to light.
  • Landscape and path lights on timers checked. They're easy to forget and they carry the whole exterior.
  • Cars out of the driveway and trash bins out of sight.
  • Blinds open on every window that faces the camera.

Our full pre-shoot checklist covers the rest of the house.

Frequently asked questions

What time do you shoot twilight photos in Los Angeles?

We shoot in the 20 or so minutes around sunset. In early October that's around 6:35 pm. After clocks fall back on November 1 it moves to around 5:00 pm, and in December it's close to 4:45 pm.

Is real twilight better than virtual twilight?

Real twilight is the stronger image, because the light on the landscape, the pool and the glass is all real. Virtual twilight costs less and needs no extra trip, and it works well on simple front exteriors. We label every virtual twilight image as digitally enhanced.

Which packages include twilight?

Debut includes 2 virtual twilight images and Premiere includes 4. Signature includes a real twilight shoot plus day-to-night video. You can see every package on our pricing page.

Can you shoot the interiors and twilight in one visit?

Yes. We start the interiors in the afternoon, move outside as the light drops, and finish on the twilight frames. The seller only has to plan around one appointment.
